The Arts Component
An Arts component is compulsory for each group's final Exhibition
Each goup will decide on one main art form which they wish to use to include in their final Exhibition. They can choose either Art, Music or Drama. Once they have made their choice, the students will be allocated an Arts teacher to work with as follows:
Ms Patricia/Ms Genevieve - Visual Art
Ms Zippy/Mr Chris - Drama
Ms Sally/Ms Amber - Music
From the 18th of March these *teachers will be scheduled to meet with the groups which selected their subject every period 8 Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri until the Exhibition sharing days (24th-26th of April). During these periods the children will work with their Exhibition group and a teacher from their chosen Arts form.
*Patricia is volunteering her time and is not expected to meet every period 8.
Note: Groups are still able to integrate additional art forms other than those they selected. For example a group selecting visual art as their focus may still perform a small skit on the day. However such additions will not be closely monitored nor assessed by The Arts Department.

Drama
Exhibition groups choosing Drama as thir artistic media will have the option of Mime, Tableau or Radio Drama to focus on during the period 8s. Each of these three dramatic art forms will have already been taught to Grade 5 prior to the Exhibition so the students will be familiar with the general features of their chosen dramatic art form. They will express elements of their issue through this chosen medium of drama. Success criteria for a successful Mime, Tableau or Radio Drama will be developed in conjunction with the students and associated check-lists and or rubrics produced. During the each of the Period 8s Ms Zippy and Mr Chris will be available and will work with groups in the Drama Room and PYP Planning Office. Initially this will occur together in the Drama room as a large group to revise the features of Mime, Tableau or Radio Drama and to select choices. Later each teacher will focuss their attention on certain groups.
Music
Exhibition groups choosing Music as their artistic media will have the option of one of the following: Song Creation, Rock Band or Music Workshop to focus on during the period 8s. Ms Amber and Ms Sally will both be available every period 8 to facilitate this. Students will work in the Music Rooms.
Taking action in the community – Music Transcends Cultural Barriers
Students will create an interactive musical workshop based on their Exhibition project. This music workshop will involve creating music (about their Exhibition issue) and expressing this in an interactive way involving children other local schools. During the period 8s children will be preparing their workshop. Later on in the exhibition process the students will visit the schools and carry out their workshop.
Connecting to the Big Wide World Through Music and Technology
Students opting for song will create and record vocal music expressing their Exhibition issue. These same students will also be involved with a Global Song Movement - connecting to the wider world. For more information on the Global Song Movement Click here to watch the video.
Rock Band
Building on the skills they have gained from their recent music unit of inquiry, students will apply their learning to create a rock band ensemble expressing their issue.

Visual Art
Exhibition groups choosing Visual Art as their artistic media will be creating an installation piece. They have the option of one of the following styles:
3D pieces made out of paper maiche or constructed out of cardboard or recycled materials.
Murals created on a paper surface to be attached to walls (or ceilings!) or painted on public school surfaces such as the outside equipment boxes.
Technology driven piece using computer animation, projections, photo story or visual narrative which is photography based.
An understanding of installation will be reviewed in art class with supporting examples from each of the three areas they can choose. Also, in class, the students will be exposed to the concept of public art –a more pervasive installation- with a class directed public art project for the new playground. The students will have to look at the issues of use of a space, logistics of installation, and the community whose space they are transforming which will be the same for their installation piece if they choose Visual Arts as their medium. Students will need to submit an arts proposal for their installation before they begin their work. The installation will be developed in conjunction with the students and associated check-lists and or rubrics produced. During the each of the Period 8s Ms. Genevieve will be involved in the preplanning with groups in the classroom initially. Both Ms. Genevieve and Ms. Dingelstad will be involved in the art production in the art room and the actual installation procedures.
